The Art of the Lead 2 Day Intensive Cost

The Fine art Brotherhood Writers' Workshop offers advanced teaching in Artistic Writing for the adult learner. Our program is a one-year intensive master's form in writing focusing on short story/fiction, poesy, nonfiction/memoir and graphic novel. We offering a Fall Semester and a Spring Semester kickoff.

Through workshops, our daylong intensives, or one-on-1 educational activity from principal writers, our program offers an alternative to, or training for, a traditional MFA.

Our program is designed to work with your schedule. Our classes are convened in the evening, assuasive y'all to consummate the program without sacrificing your career. Nosotros keep our costs low so that nosotros can offering you a high-quality writing program at a reasonable toll.

Nearly the Programme

Course Sequence

Participants accept 4 workshops, each 5 weeks long, meeting twice a week. Each workshop is led by a different teacher, and each instructor will pb a give-and-take of contemporary literature equally part of Process and Exercise.

During breaks from workshops students work one-on-one with kinesthesia to progress their writing.

Courses run across twice per week online, Tuesdays, 6 – 8 p.thou., and Thursdays, six – 9 p.k., by video conference. Yous will have additional course communications, complete form assignments, participate in topical give-and-take posts and access your course materials.

Applications are accepted on a bi-yearly basis with two opportunities to enroll—equally part of the Fall Accomplice or the Jump Cohort.

Fall 2021

Introduction to Creative Writing
Sabbatum, Sept. 25, 2021  10 a.one thousand. – 7 p.m. | Ane-Day Intensive, in person at the Art Alliance
This one-twenty-four hour period intensive will innovate you to the plan and the Fall cohort. The workshop will include readings, interactive learning opportunities and an introduction to Philadelphia's writing communities.

Writing Workshop I
5 weeks, Sept. 28 – Oct. 28, 2021 | virtual , 6 – 8 p.m., Tuesday & Thursday
This workshop will center on establishing a shared language for generation and discussion. Class fourth dimension will focus on craft, grammar, and finer communicating ideas and pregnant in writing. The class volition also serve as an introduction to y'all and your writing for the group.

Writing Workshop II
five weeks, Nov. ii – December. vii, 2021 | virtual , 6 – 8 p.m., Tuesday & Thursday
In the second workshop of your offset semester, you lot will accelerate your work through drafting, revision and the generation of new work. The emphasis in this workshop will be on the process of revision and building critical skills to evaluate and amend your writing projects.

Procedure & Practise I
10 weeks get-go Sept. 28, 2021 | virtual , eight – 9 p.m., Thursday
This course meets once a calendar week for one hour to build your knowledge of contemporary and canonic literature. The grade aims to intermission down the barrier between critic and writer.

Winter 2021/22

Wintertime Manuscript Review

Yous will accept three 45-minute sessions with a faculty member or a author from the Philadelphia writing community to discuss your work. Meetings will take place online and in person.

Spring 2022

Leap Symposium
Sat, January. 22, 2022, times TBD| I-Twenty-four hour period Intensive at the Art Alliance
This workshop will welcome the Spring cohort. Visiting writers will engage students through a panel discussion on the professional life of writers. You will participate in a master class given by a visiting writer or member of the UArts Creative Writing faculty, and yous volition develop a "next stride" program for the continuation of your writing exercise and career.

Writing Workshop III/I
v weeks, Feb. 1 – Mar. iii, 2022 | virtual , 6 – 8 p.yard., Tuesday & Th
This workshop encourages y'all to explore new forms and experimental narrative styles, focusing on the formal components of genre. In class sessions, you will receive feedback on new work and works-in-progress.

Writing Workshop IV/Two
5 weeks, March 15 – April 21, 2022 | virtual , 6 – viii p.m., Tuesday & Thursday
(Annotation: The course volition not see the calendar week of March vii, in observance of spring pause.)
For the Fall accomplice, this will exist the terminal workshop of the sequence and an opportunity to compile your chapbook or manuscript for publication. It will show the growth of your work over the form of the twelvemonth. For the Jump accomplice we volition start to work on furthering your voice, thinking near what projects you want to pursue over the summer and into the fall course season.

Process & Practice Two

This course meets once a calendar week for one hour and builds your noesis of contemporary and canonic literature. Process and Practice Two works in conjunction with the workshop classes to explore the literary context and histories relevant to your own work.

How to Apply

Application Requirements

Applicants must accept works-in-progress to be considered. A portfolio of writing (poetry, fiction, nonfiction or a combination) is a required component of the application.

  • Writing portfolio: Work should be MLA-formatted and styled in a consistent font.

    • Poesy: Submit upwardly to seven pages of poesy, starting each poem on a new folio. Verse should exist single or double-spaced, based on the aesthetic choices of the author.

    • Fiction: Submit 5-7 pages of prose, double spaced.

    • Mixed-genre: Submit no more than 7 pages total (nosotros suggest 2 – 3 pages of poesy and iv – five pages of prose, following outlined formatting guidelines for each genre).

  • A brief personal statement (500 – 700 words) addressing how you experience this program will benefit you as a author

  • A résumé

  • Attach all required materials as PDFs (.pdf) or Microsoft Word document (.doc or .docx) to your completed online application form.

If accepted, students must submit a nonrefundable matriculation fee of $100 to agree their place in the program. The matriculation fee is used to cover costs associated with the program, such as a UArts student photo ID and library access. A full payment schedule and options will be made available to accepted students.
